Redeemed by Grace, Baptized in Forgiveness
How a desperate mother in a prison cell encountered Jesus, surrendered her shame, and witnessed God's hand reunite her family and reconcile her with the officer who cuffed her.
When the Cell Door Slammed Shut
Like tens of thousands of women in Arizona and across the nation, Sarah Harbeke reached a point where darkness, pain, and broken decisions caught up with her. Incarcerated and separated from her children, the agony of maternal guilt felt like a life sentence in itself.
Yet, as Psalm 139 promises: “If I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” In that quiet bunk with steel bars surrounding her, Sarah picked up a worn Bible. For the first time, she did not read about condemnation; she read about Jesus eating with the forgotten, healing broken women, and offering living water to those whose wells had run bone dry.
“Jesus did not wait for me to get out of prison to love me. He came straight into my cell, sat on the edge of the mattress, and whispered: ‘Your past does not write your end. Give Me your heart, and I will lead you home.’”
— Sarah Harbeke, Founder of Homeward Healing
The Unimaginable Easter Baptism
After her release, Sarah refused to walk alone. She plugged into church community, engaged in discipleship, and fought daily to be the mother God called her to be. Her daughters, Gemma and Hailee, witnessed the genuine transformation in their mother’s eyes.
On Easter Sunday 2026, Sarah, Gemma, and Hailee stepped down into the baptismal waters together. But the miraculous grace did not stop there:
The law enforcement officer who had placed handcuffs on Sarah during her darkest season stood in the water with her. Having witnessed her authentic repentance and walking with Christ, the officer laid hands on her, submerging her and her daughters beneath the water and lifting them into the resurrected joy of Christ.
Why Homeward Healing Exists Today
Sarah knows what it is like to sit on metal benches wondering if your children will ever forgive you. She knows the bureaucratic hurdles of probation, the sting of background checks, and the temptation to regress.
Through Homeward Healing (HomewardHealing.org), she is walking back inside correctional walls as a certified chaplain and mentor, proving that Christ still sets captives free.

A Mother’s Heart Restored
“When Hailee and Gemma entered the water with me, and the officer blessed us in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, years of generational trauma were broken forever.”

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
Sarah’s life is proof that prison does not have the final say. Christ does. If you or someone you love is incarcerated, hope is waiting right now.
